Editorial Reviews
On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, greeted by scores of screaming, swooning fans who rushed the gate to catch a glimpse of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they took their first steps on American soil. Two nights later, on Sunday, February 9, 73 million viewers in the U.S. and millions more in Canada tuned in to CBS to watch The Beatles make their American television debut on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show.’ In what remains one of the world’s top-viewed television events of all time, The Beatles performed five songs on the live broadcast and ‘Beatlemania,’ already in full, feverish bloom in The Beatles’ native U.K., was unleashed with blissful fervor across America and around the world. The British Invasion had begun. The U.S. albums were originally issued between 1964 and 1970 by Capitol Records, Apple Records, and United Artists in the United States. These new releases seek to replicate the unique listening experience heard by Americans at the time by preserving the sequences, timings, and artwork found on the albums. Capitol’s engineers in the 1960s took great care to produce what they believed to be the best possible sound for the playback equipment in use at that time. Due to the limitations of the record players of the day, engineers often compressed the sound by raising the volume of the softer passages and lowering the volume for the louder parts of the songs. They also reduced the bass frequencies since too much bass could cause the record to skip. In some cases, reverb was added to the tracks to make them sound more “American.” This CD is packaged in a miniature vinyl sleeve that faithfully recreates the original U.S. LP release down to the finest detail, including the inner sleeve. THE BEATLES’ SECOND ALBUM was originally released April 10, 1964 in the U.S. It spent five weeks at No. 1. This album is a limited edition release.

The fidelity of the disc itself, well it has both the mono and stereo versions of each song as you may have noticed in checking this out. Personally, I prefer the mono version because my older 5.1 Surround Sound System does not have an easy access balance control like older Hi-Fi's which would come in handy playing the Stereo version because to me, the very first track, Roll Over Beethoven was just a bit too heavy with the hand-clapping coming from the one side of the system. It just sounded out of balance to me. A little overwhelming really. (Early 8 Track Tape Players not properly grounded or balanced would estroy this. Anyone hearing the song for the first time wouldn\'t know half of the recorded tracks missing.)
Back to the packaging though, it\'s like a miniature album reproduction. The disc itself is also a carbon copy of the record's printed label which takes up the circumference & diameter of the disc, that\'s the best I can describe it. You DON'T have to play the stereo or mono versions if you prefer one over the other but I find the two options a more attractive and better deal than CD's that come with Bonus Tracks myself.
About a month later, my cousin got his Mom to buy him "The Beatles Second Album" and we played it to death on their big old console stereo. It was then I got a real taste of The Beatles' big-beat sound and I became as hooked as the rest of my young generation. Today, at 57 years, I have my own copy of the Second Album. I can feel that same excitement at hearing, again and again, George's precise opening guitar attack on "Roll Over Beethoven," taken up by Ringo's machine-gun drumming. The only reason I can\'t give the Second Album 5 stars is because I wish producer George Martin hadn\'t mixed in the silly hand-clapping on that particular track. Otherwise, I think the Second Album perfectly reflects the mania that permeated baby-boomers upon discovery of "these four youngsters from Liverpool who call themselves The Beatles."
This issue of the album has all the tracks in both mono and stereo.
You can simply can\'t do it any better than these guys did. They would soon emerge as song writing royalty and their musicianship was wonderful. You can pick any, any, Beatles album and it will likely be the best possible choice. And this band isn\'t my number one band, but I think they were easily the greatest musical group ever. This CD gives the stereo and mono versions of each song.

It appears from all the glowing reviews, that no one else seems to have had this problem. I’m collecting all the US albums and all the rest of them sound wonderful with no skipping. I will order another copy from somewhere else because I love the album hence why I gave it five stars as to not bring the rating down. It’s not the album I’m disappointed in, it’s the pressing.
PS Bought a third copy from a different seller and it works perfectly. I stick to the ‘bad batch’ idea.
Bonne Écoute !
