Editorial Reviews
In their short eight-year career from 1962-1970, The Beatles changed music forever. The Beatles' 1, featuring 27 #1 hits, has sold over 32 million copies worldwide. 15 years after its initial release in 2000, the audio has been meticulously remixed by Giles Martin and remastered at Abbey Road Studios. I love new versions of songs. I love the Beatles. I will be discovering these new remixes for some time to come and discovering new details to these somewhat "unfamiliar" versions. What fun to discover the other side of the moon...the previously less emphasized sounds...sometimes seeming to come from nowhere and not cohesively matching the other versions I know so well. Again, to me, that is a GOOD thing. And the voices: clear, clean, up front, and centered in the sound stage. Wonderful.
George Martin contributed so much to the Beatles and his son Giles earns high praise with this effort. It\'s something DIFFERENT. I love it. I won\'t compare the versions on this remix to the previous versions and rate them as better or worse. Apples to oranges, almost. Creative, austere at times, back to early structured and less cluttered rock and roll...but without some of the echo and "garage" rock sound that some of the fifties and early sixties rock and roll contained. I do wish "She loves You" could be remixed for stereo, even fake or duo-phonic stereo or electronically enhanced stereo...but this remix has a different flavor. Capitol Albums Vol. I already nailed THAT.
Good job, Giles. Forget the naysayers and the sheep on the Steve Hoffman Forum who have mimicked their "infallible" host by downing the sound quality of the Beatles' recordings and this excellent remix. I still love the old versions and I love THESE versions. I'd love to have ALL of the Beatles' albums remixed by Giles. Like father, like son, that\'s my opinion. The Beatles never stayed stuck and neither should their fans, not if they appreciate art and creativity. I'd rather have dynamic and changing Beatles rather than Beatles in a museum. And, again, I really wish this offering was available via cassette. Or maybe Apple could sell the multi-tracks and devoted fans and music lovers could create their own individualized mixes.
Was there ever a better musical group than the Beatles? I think not.
Good job Giles Martin.
The songs are collected in order of album release, which is a nice touch. You get a sense of the group growing and changing as time goes on. There's quite a difference in sound and style if you go directly from "Love Me Do" to "The Long and Winding Road". It\'s a lovely tour through the most well known work of one of the world's best bands.
The only song that doesn\'t make it onto this set that surprises me is "Twist & Shout". Was it really not a #1 hit? That is perplexing to me, although I grew up on Ferris Bueller's Day Out, so maybe I'm a bit biased..
Now, you may be wondering why I didn\'t give this release a full 5 stars. It\'s due to the Amazon auto rip/digital version of the album. "From Me to You" is missing a full 2 seconds off the front of it, so the song starts very abruptly mid-lyrics. I have no idea how this happened, as the physical album is perfectly fine in this respect. If you intend to buy just the digital release, keep in mind that "From Me to You" is nerfed. I will report this issue to Amazon, but we'll see if anything gets done.
Digital release issues aside, 1 is a fantastic collection, well worth having.
UPDATE: I'm adding this on March 13th, 2021. (Better late than never, right?) I've just gone and had a listen to the digital version of "From Me to You" via the Amazon Music Player, and it appears to have been fixed. I have amended my score to reflect this change.
