I was 19 when this record came out in 1974. I loved it then and I still love it in fact I play it all the time. One of rock's greatest songwriters at his pinnacle. It\'s hard to pin this record down but if I had to pick a genre it likely would be Americana even though it came out before the term existed. Easier just to say what it really is: GREAT.

Excellent album, the remix is better but not miraculous

Much agree that this is this album is the crowning achievement of this artist. The political commentary stuff in other albums is notable but (beyond specific songs on other albums) nothing equals deeply personal content of this work.

After hearing the less than excellent (dogs barking at the audio ceiling) mix of the original when played at a volume of 10, I ordered this 40th anniversary remix hoping for fuller, clearer results. So sound-wise, this remix is perhaps 50% better than the original, but it no doubt limited by the quality of the original recording tapes. While hoping for a more perfect (contemporary) audio mixing result, not perfect but a noticeable improvement. Certainly when it comes to audio, you can\'t entirely overcome the characteristics of the original recording.

On the other hand, the content of this album is nothing short of spectacularly heartfelt. No one who likes Jackson Browne even a little, should ever be without this work. It is the "dot on the i's and the cross on the t\'s" when it comes to the very best of the material by this artist.

For those that have never heard this musical masterpiece...the five stars is well justified. There are numerous excellent reviews here on Amazon and I can\'t think of much I can contribute in the way of additional acclamation. Personally, I think this album helps to solidify Jackson Browne as one of the greatest solo artists of all time. "Late For The Sky" is not the commercial success of the other Jackson Browne albums so it\'s flown under the radar of all but the truly faithful for many years. This newly remastered version is a must-have for Jackson Browne fans new and old. From an audiophile's perspective, the freshened up CD is stunning on the right equipment featuring a true high-end DAC. So many 40-year-old albums sound tired or the songs themselves can\'t stand the test of time. Trust me - you won\'t be disappointed...the first time or one hundred listens later.

This 2014 Inside Records/Warners remaster is, on the whole, a success. It must be remastered from a source at least close to the original as what is represented here is not the "reverb version", which I presume was an idea concocted in the 80s, but the "dry" original presentation. I've always thought "For Everyman" sounded better (on CD...I haven\'t heard the vinyl of either) with a fatter and warmer sound but this version stands up to it now. I must admit that on initial listening I was firstly impressed with the weight and richness of the sound, though a little disappointed that it was a tad over compressed but I began to get irritated by how loud the vocal is over the music on the first three tracks only. (My guess is that they remastered chronologically and got better at it as they went on). After that it\'s pretty perfect. I've since gotten used to it and to be honest there's no going back to the earlier remastering that I had. There is zero hiss and attention to detail here. It\'s mastered by a collective of 3 engineers. The original production may not have been what it could have (and I don\'t mean the songs which are sublime) so on balance it\'s a great presentation and my favourite collection of his songs.
