These landmark compilations have introduced generations of fans to the incredible history of the most storied band in music. For its 50th anniversary, the collections have been expanded: ‘Red’ has 12 additional tracks, including for the first time some of George Harrison’s earliest songs and some classic Beatles versions of R&B and rock ‘n’ roll hits that were so influential on the band. ‘Blue’ has 9 additional tracks including “Blackbird” and “Glass Onion” including the last new Beatles song, “Now And Then” for a total of 21 new additions which are all compiled onto the 3rd disc, effectively creating a ‘new’ LP for each set.

Together the 6LP’s contain 75 tracks, 36 of which have new mixes for 2023. The inserts contains new sleeve notes by journalist and author John Harris. For current fans and future generations alike, the new 1962 – 1966 & 1967 - 1970 collections are a joyous celebration of The Beatles’ timeless musical legacy.

Great sounding albums

These reissues are expanded to triple albums and contain the new Giles Martin remixes, some of which we’ve heard before but others are brand new. On the whole they sound fantastic, and you can hear the subtleties missed on original mixes. If you’re just a casual fan, you won’t really notice too much difference except the clarity of the recordings, except on a couple of tracks where differences are clear. I Am The Walrus is probably the most obvious new mix, particularly during the long fade where the background noise of the original is brought forward - I’m not sure I like it, but it’s an interesting change.
The first two discs of each set keep to the same running order as the original double albums, meaning the third disc is more like a bonus disc, out of chronological order from the other two (for example disc 3 of 1962-1966 starts with a track from 1963, having closed disc 2 with a track from 1966). Personally I would have preferred everything in chronological order, but additions such as the extraordinary ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ are very welcome.
The big no-no for me is the inclusion of ‘Now and Then’. Lovely song, well made and beautifully utilising a Lennon demo and added to by the other three, but a song recorded between 1977(ish) and 2023 does not belong on an album called ‘1967-1970’. If they wanted to include it, maybe they should have just included a bonus EP with this box set called something like ‘1977-2023’ to include this song plus the two released in the 90s.
But that’s really a minor thing. This is the Beatles, oozing quality and some of the greatest and most inventive music ever made. You can’t possibly go wrong with that.

My only complaint is that it arrived 5 days after release even though I pre ordered it a while back. Amazon is not the place to go if you want a new release on the official release date. They used to be but not now.
